I cant speak for everyone here Deegs but none of our team drink to calm nerves, we have a drink because it is for most of us a social night out, i work every weekend and never get a chance to have a drink so Tuesday is my weekend, as for 3 drinks , are you talking about the first hour?
The point Mike is making is that pool is a pub sport, pubs need to sell beer to pay wages and survive, if everyone drank soft drinks, pubs would cease to exist, its getting harder and harder to get local publican sponsors on board, probably due to the irn bru brigade who give little return to the publicans coffers after the publican putting up good money for the prize in the first place, there are other factors as well like cheap drink in supermarkets and the smoking ban which have all combined to hurt publicans but Mike does have a valid point, it's fair enough to not drink alcohol if you have to drive to work every Tuesday night after the pool or if you live a distance away and dont want to pay taxis, anything else smacks of winning at all costs by staying sober all season in every game you play, the irn bru brigade are sending out a very clear message to other players stating you need to keep sober to win, if everyone follows that message league pool will eventually end up like the snooker league with little or no prize money and no atmospheres at venues, probably driving all the snooker players back to where they came from.
To put Mikes arguement in simple terms, if we split the league and all competitions into a drinking league/competition and a non drinking league/competition, you guess which one the publicans would all want to sponsor , answers on a postcard!!!!
